starter issue?

on my '91 exploder, occasionaly youj turn the key and the power works but it doesnt hit the selinoid or engage the starter, then you turn te key again and it starts no problem.

now can anybody tell me if this is a starter issue, maybe the selinoid is not connecting right, or if this is more of an ignition problem. any help would be great thanks.

Re: starter issue?

Welcome to the forum!

When you turn the key to Start do you get solid clunk, a subtle relay click, or neither? If it gets to a point where it happens more often, try shifting to neutral to see if that makes it start reliably.

Re: starter issue?

thanks, i get neither sound, i keep listening for the clicking coming form the silenoid, but nothing. then you retry the key and it starts no problem. thats why im trying to figure out if its a wiring issue in the ignition or not, or if it's a wiring issue in some other spot. I just keep being told that is the starter and im not so sure. It just doesnt seem like any starter problem i've ever seen so far.

Re: starter issue?

Agreed, if you are not even getting the click from the starter relay (you'll want to confirm this which is difficult since it doesn't happen all the time) then the starter at least isn't the ONLY problem.

Have you noticed if, in the Start position when it does nothing, do the idiot lights go out and the radio/blower motor shut off like they would when the starter does engage?
