Re: 2002 explorer 4.0l, will die when turning from stop sometimes
What's the idle speed just sitting still with the transmission in drive and foot firmly on the brake? If you turn the steering with the vehicle sitting still in drive with your foot on the brake does it act like it wants to stall? How about when you get to one of the steering locks? Is the idle smooth or pretty rough?
If the idle is smooth but it tries to stall when turning the steering I'd suspect a problem with the Idle Air Control (IAC) since it is supposed to increase the idle air bypass under load. If the idle is rough anyway, then I'd suspect a vacuum leak. With the V6 it's probably either the PCV elbow or the intake manifold gaskets (common). -Rod |

Re: 2002 explorer 4.0l, will die when turning from stop sometimes
I just went out and tried it. with it in drive the idle didn't change, but then i put it in reverse the idle dropped then picked back up. then couldn't get it to do it again. talking to the wife (her car) that is when it happends most of the time. and if turning in a parking lot from a stop and changes gears, it might die.

So was the idle smooth or rough (could feel the engine running in the seat)?

its not 100% smooth. you can feel a little miss fire.

Does your 2002 have spark plug wires or Coil on Plug (CoP) ignition? If plug wires, you should consider replacing them as well.
I'm betting though that you have a vacuum leak causing the concerns, as mentioned in post #2 above. -Rod |
