Paint retarder

I just brought the GSI retarder mild. I am wondering if this can only use with Mr.color lacquer paint. How about Tamiya acrylic paint and other brands paint?

Re: Paint retarder

I've never tried, but I heard you can, just like Mr.Thinner can be used to thin Tamiya Acrylics even though the thinner is meant for Mr. Color, which is synthetic lacquer-based acrylic. The thing is, water soluble paints like Tamiya Acrylic tend to dry slowly (but not always!), so it's kind of pointless to slow down the drying time even more by adding Ratarder.

As for lacquer-based paints, I haven't had any problem using Mr. Retarder with other brands like Finisher's, Gaia Notes, etc.

Re: Paint retarder

Speakin outside Gunze, I bought some time ago a Modeeler's product named "Retarder Thinner" who the people of Rainbow Ten told me to not treat it like a thinner. Since all the info on the label its in Japanese I can't understand, Hiroaki, have you hear about the use of this product? Do it's like the Mr Leveling thinner that include the retarder, or its just the retarder for Modeler's paint?

Just let me know.

Re: Paint retarder

For some reason the Tamiya Arcylic paint is drying pretty fast, especially on those flat base paint. I checked with some other forums and some modelers did complain about that when they used for brush paintings. I found that tamiya have their own acrylic paint retarder. So I just wonder if I have to stick with that or I can use Mr. Color retarder mild on acrylic paint.

Re: Paint retarder

Regular Tamiya thinner for acrylics seems to slow drying and help flatten brush marks.

Seriously? You have to ask this?

Tamiya makes exactly the product you need, and yet you need to ask if another product made by a different company for an entirely different type of paint (aqueous acrylic vs lacquer) will work as well...?

Re: Paint retarder

Wow! I was just looking for a retarder to use with Tamiya X20 clear. It's the only Tamiya color i spray and i've really had a rough time (pun intended) spraying a smooth coat under the warm dry conditions i paint in about half the year. I'm not sure its stocked in the US anywhere, Tamiyausa doesn't show it and i didn't find any us sellers in my quick search this afternoon. I did find it on E-bay from a seller in HK for no more than it would cost at my local shop if only the had it. Hopefully my little package will arrive before the first snow.

Of course I know it works perfectly with its own brand. I only want to know if Tamiya acrylic paint will work with GSI retarder mild.
