Nothing wrong with new oil. It probably won't fix your valve chatter problem, though. The very first thing to do if your valves are making noise is to adjust them.
It's surprisingly easy. All you need is a 10mm wrench or socket to get the valve cover bolts, a feeler gauge, and a big socket/ratchet (I think it's a 17mm, but I could be wrong) to stick through the opening in the plastic cover on the inside of your driver's side wheel well to turn the motor to the proper position. You'll also need a wrench to loosen the adjusters-hold downs, and a screwdriver. That's it! Do it when the car is cold, have a manual ready so you know what the valve clearances are supposed to be, and get to work! It'll take 15 minutes if you know what you're doing, and an hour if you don't. Flunky |

Make sure the "thicker" oil you use is within Honda's recommendations - keep in mind that on startup it wont circulate as quickly either leading to lower engine life.
I won't go lower than 5-50 Mobil 1 but I occasionally drop in Honda "Type-R" 10-30. All Honda drivetrain clatters after a while - I've noticed the B16As are the worst offenders... even if the valves are to spec you get some noise. |
