4 cyl
Is it possible to make a 1.6 4 cyl engine manual much faster?

Re: 4 cyl
Turbo or Supercharging is the most obvious performance advantage. What kind of engine & car is it? I know of many 1.6L engines which are dreadfully slow, and know of many more which are quite fast (like the Honda B16). Give some more details about the engine and I/we will try to help you out.

Re: 4 cyl
lighten the vehicle by 1000 pounds.
Its too generic of a question. What is your actual goal. We'll tell you have big of a wallet you need. Or at least give you an idea.

Re: 4 cyl
is it a honda, toyota. nissan? these 1.6's can put out more power than an american v8 with a turbo, with stock internals.

Riiiiight......... The power limit of the stock internals for the Honda B16, Toyota 4agze and Nissan SR16 (thier strongest 1.6L 4cyl enignes) is about 300hp, give or take. In the 90s (the period these engines were in production) there were GM and Ford V8s making 300hp in stock naturaly asperaited form. Of course there were some V8s that were only making 150hp, less than the 160hp of the Japanese engines, but then they were very old designs being made very cheap and sold to a naive public who thought anything with a GM or FORD badge was the work of a god.

Re: 4 cyl
I think he means the turbo on the four, on stock internals, against a completely stock v8, in a car that weighs ... well as much as a car that would get a v8.

The real differences come with where internal parts break. My brother-in-law has a 1200-hp 417 small block chevy and he breaks stuff all the time ![]() All engines (including 1.6s) respond the same way to modifications that any engine does. The secret is knowing what parts are holding it back in its stock form. Usually engine components are pretty well matched but emissions and drivability requirements keep stock power levels a little lower. The other important factor is what you want to do with the engine. A 200-hp 1.6 is an entirely different animal from a 200-hp 5.7 V8. When you make big power with a small engine, you have to know that you have to rev it to make that power which can be a terrible pain on the street.

Which is about the only way to get a useable 300hp out of an engine that small. Although I personaly wouldn't do it on stock internals. They are all strong little motors, but thats asking rather a lot from them. And of course we all know how pointless it is comparing a heavily modified engine against a stock one, and two enignes used in completely differnt applications. That said running with a 300hp Holden HSV in a 160hp Honda Civic is very amusing.

Re: 4 cyl
well....to further muddy the water. 300HP out of a 1.0 liter with stock internals. OK, I admit, I did finally replace the pistons
![]() The motor in question will drastically affect the answer here. Some motors are way over-engineered and can handle a lot of abuse. Others....well, some motors make good boat anchors
