Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

Some of you may know that i have been trying to sell my Bike for about a year now and there just is not a market for these things around here. So i was talking to a friend of mine recently when he proposed that we trade. My bike and a little cash for a motor he has been putting together for about 1.5 years. Now he is saying that i am going to have to buy a 351W intake in order to make this work. He also said that i will have to change some wiring to make it work. There is also another problem, he told me the pistons he bought are domed and that it should have a compression ratio of 12:1!!!! Is there any way to lower this if those pistons are going to be used? I have told him i don't want it if the compression is over 10.5:1. Now as far as i knew the heads worked fine with the stock (5.0 H.O.) intake. And i also thought as long as i was't switching to a 351W engine i would not have to swap computers. In case i did not explain my self well here is a rundown on the specs:

302 2 bolt mains
.020 over on crank
.030 over bore
crane rods
crane lifters
He ordered pistons, but somethin is going on.....?
GT40P heads
Crane cam, unknown specs...he said when it ran it was pretty lumpy...

This should all work with my stock componets right? I am going to beep him in a little bit and ask him a few more questions.

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

We have agreed that the value of our trade is about $1400. So let me know if you think this is a good deal for the engine, or if i should pass.

You don't need a 351W intake unless you use a 351W block.

I'd have to crunch the numbers but you might be able to get your CR down with a thicker head gasket but I think that is a big enough change where you would have to doublestack head gaskets(yuck!)

Crane makes rods?

P-heads are those the one's that have different exhuast bolt pattern from stock? I dunno I'm not a ford racing parts guy....

It's only an equal trade if it's worthwhile to you and at 12:1 CR it's def hard to say that.

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

P-heads are from a late 90's explorer 5.0 V-8. The exhaust manifolds on those went up, so the spark plug is almost straight under the port sticking straight out. 60cc combustion chambers, 1.84 intake/1.46 exhaust valves. Springs are only good to 500 lift. Makes a bit better power than a Cobra GT-40 iron head due to compression increase and better flowing exhaust port. Requires special FRPP or any MAC header.

I wouldn't do it personally. There is a 98 explorer in a local yard with relatively low miles that they want 650 for the engine, throttle body to oil pan. It has "P" heads and the intake is roughly equivalent to a foxbody Cobra intake. I don't know if these are roller blocks or not, but if not, slap a roller conversion and an E cam/1.6's or 2031/1.7's on it, and it would cost less than 1400 and put out roughly 300 crank HP. I wouldn't doubt you could find an explorer in a 'yard with a 5.0 in it..

P heads sell on classifieds and ebay for around 300 bucks.

The questionable cam is also bad ju ju. that's one of the more important pieces in your motor, you need to know what its specs are.

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

Well i talked with him a little bit today and he is still kinda fuzzy on all of the details. And yes he said crane rods....i did't think they made rods either but i am kinda new to the game so can't always doubt someone. I thought about it, but it aint worth it to me. what really killed the deal for me was how indecisive he was with answears. I have know him since 3rd grade so i know he aint trying to rip anyone off, but he is also a huge scatter brain. I don't even think he knows what kind of rods he is using. After talking a little more with him about what he was aiming to get with this motor, i figured out what he is trying to do. He wants a HIGH rpm motor without spending the cash to do it right, so he found the first motor with a big cam already in it, then decided to rebuild it just cuz he had extra cash. That's not at all what i want. I guess this is why he has 3 parts mustang's and one project mustang that is in worse shape the the other 3.

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

I forgot to let anyone in th MI. area know, he is selling everything the has to do with his mustangs. He got another idea having to do with a truck and ran with it. As far as i know he has 2 trans. (auto and stick) a rolling LX chassis full interior for 2 cars and other random engine stuff. He asked me to post that for him, so if there is any takers PM me.

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

My guess would be they are crane pushrods... I've never seen a crane connecting rod. Maybe he said Childs rods?

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

probably crane pushrods. Can't fit much more than a 500 lift through the stock cam journals, so they gotta grind down the base circle to get the lift, hence longer pushrods. I had to go to a 6.310" pushrod with my Crane 2031...

Re: Clear up some questions about GT40P heads

There is always the possibility i misheard him. Either way it aint gonna happen, i've been talking to a fella that work's at a very reputible machine shop. After talking with him about prices and options i could't beleive i seriously considered the other engine.
