Disconnecting battery to erase codes?

I attended a GM CCC course in 1991 and was taught that to erase the trouble codes you should disconnect the battery. I see from reading other threads that this is no longer true. Does anyone know what model-year this changed?

OBD2 1995 ON SOME MODLES 1996 all
