I've owned my 02 SLT+ for a little over a year now, and have several scary moments with the ABS kicking in and "releasing" the brakes for a seemingly long period of time (probably 1/2 sec or so) under conditions where I would have rather they just held the wheels locked. It does this about half the time. And, of course, never when trying to demonstrate it to a service rep. I believe I would be better off with the ABS simply disabled.
(This is not brake fade. The brakes hadn't been used enough to be hot or even warm, yet. This happens typically on first application in a semi-panic-stop situation - often under somewhat slippery conditions.) Can I just "pull a fuse" somewhere? Will that work properly? Other ideas? I never seen this type of "bad behavior" in any of the several other ABS vehicles I have owned over the years. Thanks in advance. |

Re: How Do I Disable My 02 Durango ABS ?
JTD - I fully agree with your observation. My '98 takes MUCH GREATER DISTANCE THAN IT SHOULD

Re: How Do I Disable My 02 Durango ABS ?
I have a 98 D I just bought and shows ABS on the dash controls but when brake is applied hard in both 4x4 or 4x2 it locks up. This giving me a longer distance. Is the ABS working right??

What do you mean "it shows ABS on the dash controls"? Are you saying the yellow ABS light is always lit? Is the red Brake light also lit? ... more info please... Dave |

Re: How Do I Disable My 02 Durango ABS ?
No it doesnt stay lit.. but when I start it it shows then turns off. Im just saying my vehicle has ABS but it doesnt feel like it has it or it not working cause it locks up. ABS systems are not suppose to lock up and should pulse the brake.

Thanks, I understand now, and I also agree they are not supposed to lock up.

On my '98 Durango (which my ABS crapped out) I pulled a fuse under the hood near the battery, black cover pops off / pulled fuse (under cover shows which one). My ABS pump was stuck on or something caused my battery to discharge (with key out of ignition too). Need to bring into shop ... again.

Are you saying you found a blown fuse? If so, any parts store will have replacements. Dave |

I recently had a HUGE problem with the ABS on my 99 slt.... $1300 to replace the HydrolicControl Unit and now everything is fine (except gas milage).... but my observation on the ABS "locking up". If its not snowing or wet (and you are traveling fast) the ABS won't kick in, and you WILL lock'm up. After several test drives with the Dodge Certified mechanic at my side, I locked em up several times, and was told thats the way its suppossed to be, and to bring it back IF it locks up in the Snow. It snowed I slammed on the brakes and the ABS kicked in right on schedule. GoodLuck HBD |

Re: How Do I Disable My 02 Durango ABS ?
Our 01 durango ABS went out this past winter. It did like someone else was mentioning about running/humming non-stop. We called the mechanic who had us pull one of the plugs out of the unit. It should be under the hood near the windshield on the driver side a little silver (?) box about 3x5. If you unplug it, it will disable the ABS. However it will also unplug your Speedometer and Odometer. Luckily we have a GPS we now use as our speedometer.
