WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

Hi all

I am going to attempt to build a zcars R1 powered mini,
using a tamiya 1/24 mini cooper, and scan, scale and mould my own
1/24 scale R1 motor from a tamiya 1/12 yamaha R1 kit

to start with I am scanning all the engine parts from the 1/12 R1 kit so i can reduce it to 1/24, make patterns,
moulds and then cast parts from resin.

Re: WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

I'm quite a fan of this type of car; where the driver sits inches from the engine and the car has nothing it doesn't absolutely need.

You're rather privileged to have access to a 3D scanner, do you have a photo of it? It looks like it will make this project less complicated.

Thanks for the comments, the 3D scanner is also a desktop milling machine, called a Roland MDX-20,
it also comes with a multitude of software for scanning, engraving, drilling, profile cutting and 3d milling.
I also have a licensed copy of alibre design professional, so I can design my own models , see my signature at bottom

Re: WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

Thanks Mark, great resource. have started drawing up some
models of the fuel tank and a few other bits but they are not
to the correct size, will modify them when I am doing the build
and making the moulds.

I also picked up a tamiya 1/24 super seven, another ideal candidate for the R1 motor.
Progress might be a little slow for a while as I have changed career
to a composite laminator and need to focus on gaining experience hopefully to get into F1 in a year or 2

Looks like I lost something cool...

So all you have after scanning is a surface: have you to close it in solid or can you mill down just a surface?

I'm really courious to see more
And obviously I'm ready to buy a copy of your straight4, I got a S7 left too

Re: WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

Hi Gio

the scan can be exported as a stl or iges file and opened into the
cam software as is, where it can be rescaled and milled.

little update, machined the scanned head at 50% scale looks bad but its out of focus and I could machine it at
a higher resolution, its tiny
All the parts have been scanned and turned into stl files ready for machining

Is that machined out of wax? It looks very interesting so far!

Hi! nice machine! is that a cam cover made of wax? if so, is it used to make a mould to later make a resin copy of it? it really looks very cool!

Re: WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

no its an r1-yzf tappet cover, looks similar though. Yes it is made of wax, this is the pattern
that the silicone mould gets made from and then resin can be poured into the mould. It is cool to have a little milling machine like this,
it is normaly used in the jewelry industry and at schools. Even better to be able to make solid models and cut them out on the machine.
My appologies for not responding sooner or adding more details,
I broke my profile cutter and the post for a new one from the USA is a tad high so I am going to wait until I can order
more cutters at the same time to make it worth while. http://www.bitsbits.net/index.php?ma...products_id=17

Re: WIP Zcars 1/24 scale yamaha R1 engine mini conversion

Moulded a few engine parts. Mainly the head and a few of the covers.
Raw castings made from polyester resin.
Busy machining the engine block components.
Next I need to make the r1 dash to go in the mini and any super 7 varients.
Also need to start making components to go in the mini such as fuel tank,
suspension, differential, engine cover. Need to purchase some 2" scale styrene rod for the roll cage .
