Are crosshatches normal in engine with 113,000 miles?
I picked up an engine from the junkyard and you can still see some crosshatching in the cylinder. Do you think the motor was rebuilt? It is out of a Grand Prix 3.8 Liter.

Its not unlikely. I've seen them in engines with 213k. It depends on maintenance.

Usually in the lower part of cylinder , some parts of many cyclinders do not get touched by piston at all.
Never see it at the top where the rings stop. |

To clarify, the crosshatches are towards the top of the cylinder say 1.5" from the top, but they aren't the whole way around they are just here and there. You would think the rings would have them worn off with that kind of mileage.

While on the subject are the pistons supposed to have any slop from side to side?I didn't take a compression test so I hope it's all right as far as cylinder wear and burning oil.(crosshatching here and there)

They should have noticeable play when moving them around. Mostly sideways rocking. If the rod is still hooked then it wo'nt rock much either way. The best way is to check clearance at largest part of skirt perpendicular to the pin and subtract from cylinder diameter.
