Evo VI WRC Build Diary
Back into another "project". This time a Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. Started this kit in late 2001, intending to make it a quick build
![]() In fact I was in some doubt if I should post these early pictures at all. It is an ambitious project and could very likely end up being too big a task to complete satisfactorily. So if this thread disappears in the next few weeks or months then you'll all know it was beyond me and are never to speak of it again! Agreed? Okay now please sign these forms and come look at the pictures ![]() First up, here is the Evo body with a new 'Tommi Makkinen Special Edition' front end that was introduced on the 2000 Cyprus rally (or thereabouts). This resin piece is from Studio 27 and is nicely moulded and looks accurate enough to me. ![]() Next two shots show the bonnet (hood, engine cover, whatever), driver’s door and boot removed. At the moment I think I’ll stick to removing just the one door. If things go well I may take the other one off later. I have to thank darrenj for turning me on to the Hasegawa Tritool etched saws. Combined with the old back of an Exacto blade trick they made removing everything a piece of cake. ![]() ![]() Last shot is a close up of the prototype door hinge. Stole the idea off the Midnight Cruising website. It is constructed of a length of brass wire inserted through a piece of brass tube. Seems to work well for a first rough attempt. Only problem is the door droops a bit too much when opened. Will be time consuming to get everything to sit right, especially the boot. If it all gets too hard I may just have to glue everything in the open position. ![]() Been tinkering with my SEAT Cordoba as well. However, this is a white metal kit which I find a very unpleasant medium - can only stand to work on it in short bursts. |

![]() ![]() This should be good! Are you looking to make a diorama for this model, such as some roadside repairs by Tommi?

Very nice idea, I have the S27 Transkit as well, but i'm planning on doing a copy of the TME road car. Please keep us updated with photo on this, as it should be great.

You are one piece of courageous modeler!! I don't have the guts to cut my models open for the extra details!! Stunning.
Yeah, what about the engine? Do you have enough reference material for detailing the engine bay and booth in the back? Anyway, good luck and keep us informed!! Guido |

Looks great so far. Maybe you could pinch the brass tube to tighten up the door hinge. Also mabe you could make the hinge wires go into holes in styrene block inside body so you could install door after painting. Whatever don't give up.

![]() The hinge is just a very quick test to see if the concept will work. The door and door sill have to be built up yet, the final working hinge will indeed be anchored as you suggest. The hinge is nice and tight, the reason the door droops is because the way I've thrown it together the metal tube musn't be completely vertical. Will take some head scratchin' to figure out how to make it so. |
