22RE Engine Swap
Hi. I have a 88 Toyota 4x4 w/ a 22RE that needs a new engine. A friend of mine has a 22R that I was thinking of getting off him and switching over the carb to fuel injection. Is there any problems with doing this kind of change over? I was told that you could change a 22RE to a 22R, but not a 22R to a 22RE(something about the head being different). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

make sure you use the heads on his engine if the ports are different between the two heads.older toyota heads had different port design and the heads willnot work on a newer engine i was told.

22R-any heads
in my last couple of months i have learned that toyota makes heads for the differant 22r motors, my 22R-TE has a smaller head than the 22R-E im sure just the 22R has a differant sized head as well........ so my advise would be to move the blown engine head over if its in good shape, but if its not at least take some mesurements on the both heads and compare them just to make sure, i know what its like to get the wrong head and have to spend lots of time finding a new one and puting it all back together
