Cool Along came a chameleon Spyder...

Took pics of this to show off the red-blue chameleon paint, it's a cool model too

It's the old Monogram Corvette Spyder show car. I ditched the kit rims and added some Pegasus rims, painted the car in a different shade than the stock silver/yellow. Looks pretty cool, and it's an attention getter w/this paint job.

Mr. Downey,

Great looking vette!! I love the paint type also.

Did you drill out the exhaust tail tips? It looks solid maybe with a slight recess from the rear face of the tip.

How would you go about drilling that elongated area out?

Are you the same person that has authored some books on modeling? I have one and it has been real helpful.

Thanks,

Allen

Thanks for the comments, I just painted that flat surface black leaving a bit of an outline, just to fool the eye into thinking it's open. Drilling it out would be tricky, you'd have to drill multiple holes and finish w/a hobby knife, preferably you'd have a milling machine make that cut in one pass, but that's an expensive tool! A small tip on a Dremel tool can work, if your hand is really steady.

I authored "How to use an Airbrush" for Kalmbach, and it's been a very good seller, and I've had a lot of great feedback on it. I'm glad to hear you like the book, it was a fun bunch of projects that really stretched my modeling skills since I normally only build cars...it was much fun doing the other projects too, and teaching myself a few things along the way. I'm glad that it's been a help to you and a everyone else.

This is so funny you should mention that! It recenly was added to my list of future projects!

So may I ask all of you this: what kit in 1/24 scale should be used to make a 1984 Corvette?

TIA

Wow, an old (over 2 months) thread unearthed and it's getting lots of attention! Thanks-

The paint was incredibly easy. I primed the body w/Varsity (Pep Boys brand) black sandable primer, polished it smooth, and w/my airbrush I dusted on a couple coats of the color changing paint...it's blue-red PPG Harlequin. I bought a small quantity of it from a paint store, and sold the rest to friends in my model club...it's expensive, but it takes so little of it to paint a car that it's actually no more expensive to paint than other paints. It goes on dull, you have to add a clearcoat-and that really brings out the colors fully. You usually paint this type of paint over a black base, so I just used the primer to do double duty.

Monogram made the '84 Corvette kits-both snap-tite and glue kits. Much better than AMT's kits of the same car, and Monogram's are 1/24th. I don't know what (if any) current kits are close to it, but any '84-'86 or even later kit may be okay, just stick to Monogram. Might want to check Hobby Heaven or eBay. They shouldn't be too expensive, they were made in huge quantities.
