Igniter unit HELP!
Hey, I think I finally figured out what is wrong with my damn car. I think the igniter unit is fried (or possibly the ignition coil). Anyways, I plan to replace the ignition coil first, and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna try and replace the igniter unit.
Can I do that, or do I need to buy a whole new dizzy?

its easy, just pop off the cap, and bam the coil is right there, there are two wires connected to it.....easy replacement. The ignitor is slighty harder but not really, its under the coil, has like 5 wires connected to it and 2 bolts holding it on. Its like a 10 minute job to get them replaced.
Make sure you mark which wires go where.

I had my ignitor go out on my car when i was driving down the road. But best way and cheapest method, is to first replace the coil, then the ignitor.

You could say the hell with this and swap that d16y8 in there right now, but you are probably still working on it.

Thanks for the help y'all. I'm gonna go outside and test my coil right now. Just gonna throw the ol' volt/ohm meter on there and see what I get. If it checks out, I'm gonna try and find myself a new igniter somewhere... It's about funkin' time, though. I've been without my car for almost 2 months! And to top it off, my Jeep is fucked too!

I replaced the coil today, and no improvement, so that is not the problem, going to return the coil for a refund ($84 for a fuckin' coil?!), so I removed the ignitor, but don't see any physical signs of damage, but I want to replace it and see what happens. There's nothing in the helms manual that says how to test it, so I'm just gonna stick a new one in. I really hope I don't have to buy a whole new dizzy for this engine, when I'm gonna have to turn around and buy another one for my D16Y8 in the next few months... ![]() Quote:
FAQ: 1.) YES, I gapped all the plugs properly (actually, they were all pre-gapped, but I checked them with the guage anyways). 2.) YES, I'm absolutely POSITIVE that I have the right firing order. 3.) YES, I'm sure all the plug wires are on the right posts. 4.) NO, I did not accidentally bump the distributor, thus affecting the timing (The timing is FULLY controlled by a computer, and the dizzy does NOT rotate, and there is NO way to manually adjust the timing). 5.) YES, all the plug wires are good! They all get spark, and I have personally been shocked by each one of those motherfuckers. 6.) YES, the coil is good. 7.) NO, I didn't fuck with anything else. I've already posted this in the Jeep Cherokee forum, but if y'all have any ideas, I'd love to hear them (although I wouldn't be surprised if I've already heard them)

well if you put the rotor on good, double check, and the cap on good, double check. then either you must have messed up the wiring, or you didnt put the spark plug wires on the spark plug good.
one time i was working on this Z28, doing a full tune up. so i replaced the rotor, cap, wires, plugs. well as you know, when you put the wire on the plug it suppose to click on, and that tells you its on good. well i clicked all of them on but one, so i started it up and drove around and it was missing. so i just switch wire spots and i got it clicked on, and it ran fine, plus after the tune up, the car felt more responsive and faster. point is make sure you put the wires on the plugs good, you can tell that by a loud click it makes when it snaps on the plug, not a soft click but a loud click. because i noticed that it has a small click once then a loud click after when its on good |
