Arrow 2001 gagt lifter noise....

im sorry if this is a common topic!!!

i have a 2001 grand am gt with the 3.4 and the noise comming from the engine sounds like the lifters are going bad. i was wondering if the ticking is the lifter(only happens when i start the car,or until 1200rmps)? and if you think it is the lifters is it hard to tear the top end of the engine down to fix this problem?

im a HONDA guy myself so i am familiar with fixing engines, just not a pontiac lol.....1990 prelude o yea!!!!

Typical problem on start ups and when cold.

See this thread
1999 Grand Am GT ticking

Seafoam usually cleans them up not requiring a tear down thats pretty involved see below....

Re: 2001 gagt lifter noise....

Sea Foam is a fuel/engine treatment product sold at most all parts stores.

They sell injection/engine treatment and a transmission treatment, alone with other products.
You just add 2-3 Oz of the injector cleaner to the oil.
It will thin your oil a little, but cleans the insides very well from my experiance .

Lifters tick usualy in our cars because of varnish build up on them,
which also makes then not work properly and can then become damaged.

Now if somethings "knockin" then you have other problems beyond the lifters.

Good Luck!

Re: 2001 gagt lifter noise....

I would wait untill its close to oil change time, run it 1-2 days then change the oil.
Might take another treatment or two to clean them up.

I would not use anything in the oil but what's made for it.
The sea foam is made for the specific purpose of cleaning the injection system and the varnish inside the motor.

If it doesnt quiet down after a few treatments you lifters may be worn out........

hope that helps
