If you play around with the elevators, you can make the plane do some nifty loops and such.
BTW, my best distance was 88.8593

First throw was 90.904 metres
Second throw was 26.4204 metres Third throw was 103.7511 metres Fourth throw was again 103.7511 metres (6 degree downangle, max thrust and level seven elevator setting) Last throw was 88.9194 metres The infuriating thing is the lack of fine adjustment for the launch angle!
