Big Turbo RX7 WIP

Here is a project I started in early '07. I now have time to finally get back into the build. It started life as a Tamiya RX7 R1. I didn't want to perform much custom body work with this build so I decided to compare my favorite Aoshima RX7 kit to this one. Seeing as how these kits are nearly identical in size, I decided to combine the wonderful rotary engine and decent chassis from the Tamiya kit with the excellent body from the Aoshima kit. After some careful cutting, filing, and sanding the Tamiya piece fit like a glove in the Aoshima body. Body work issue solved! The hood was also removed from the Aoshima body.

In the works currently is making a new cowl, firewall, radiator support, etc. The two piece downpipe and external wastegate is nearly ready to be added. In keeping with Japanese flavor, this build will feature a custom horizontal (flat) mounted, engine compartment intercooler just above the radiator with electric fans on top. New progress pics to be added soon.

Motor is the Tamiya piece with scatchbuilt turbo, ex. mani, pulley system, fuel injectors/rail/wiring, ignition modules, linkage, etc.

Here is some of the build up so far ...

Re: Big Turbo RX7 WIP

Looks great so far....and the turbo looks fantastic.

...im not sure if you are interested but this is an RX7 that i saw at HIN that had a stacked TwinTurbo setup. you seem to have the skill to be able to pull it off, if not for this one then sometime in the future maybe...?

Either way im sure this one will be beautiful.
keep up the good work.

oh...also, i ment to ask in the other deal but since im here: You said that you were making those turbos for some friends of yours and i was wondering if they were to be bought or if you were just making them for them...if so how much does one of those beauties go for??
Truely top notch work you got there my friend!!

Re: Big Turbo RX7 WIP

Thanks guys! A write up on the turbo's will be down the road a tad. Only twin turbo idea I had was doing a drag G35 (Japanese Skyline) with RB26DETT from the Tamiya R32 Skyline kit. I have the kits and parts, just too many projects going right now. The turbo's are not for sale at this time. -Mike
