Re: studded snow tires fall out?
they shouldnt fall out if you stay within the limits of the tires.
what is their max speed listed as? its ususally 55 or so. you shouldnt be driving on snow tires if there isnt snow on the ground. just making sure... |

Re: studded snow tires fall out?
Usually the studs fall out long before the tread wears out. Pretty normal. If more than half fall out in the first couple seasons you should worry. Even so, you can buy more studs and have them installed.
You didn't ask for this, but you know opinions are like a-holes... but I'm concerned for your safety. where do you live in Canada? Studs are 1940s technology. They are deadly on dry and wet pavement, do next to nothing on snow, and only really shine on shear ice (in which case you shouldn't be driving anyway). A good set of Blizzaks or similar winter studless tire will do much better in the future. I drove every winter in PA with a RWD V8 on 275/40-17 summer-only performance rubber. There were times when I really needed an all-season 235, but never studs.

Re: studded snow tires fall out?
Although after miles and miles of use the holes will elongate and get wallowed out it is common for tires that are years old and over half worn out to have many missing studs, They are not supposed to fall out and there's a reason they are not there.
It is not normal (common maybe) Here's a few reasons I can think of: The end cap holding stud in the hole came off and the stud simply fell out and you can tell by insertinmg metal into hole to feel the end of the stud is still there. The stud was not installed far enough and was originally hanging out a lot. The stud was never put in, if there 3 in a row this is likely. The hole was not drilled deep enough or too big and won't hold the stud properly. Installing too long of studs (or too shallow of hole), they would all be hanging out. In any case I would drive car to shop, and request they string an air hose and stud gun out to install 3 studs into the holes that are missing. Mark them to see if they come out again then either drill 3 new holes or simply leave them out. |

Re: studded snow tires fall out?
I used to work in a tire place and we installed them usually in higher end Michelin snow radials, let me say this, we had a pnuematic installation tool and when they were in there, they were there to stay, no such animal as a loose one.
I agree that dry pavement is what does them in, some states have outlawed them as they are not road surface friendly. To me, they should only be used where you have extended periods of icy weather roads. Bob |

Re: studded snow tires fall out?
speaking from installing studs for a living, a properly installed stud will not come out of the tire no matter what you do. Dry pavement will only wear them down, it will not cause them to fly out of the tire.
granted, installing studs isn't fun or easy, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if 3 whole studs came out early in the tires life. I wouldn't personally make a stink about it. I think the other 400 or so studs that are left will adequately do their job without issue. If you really feel its important, take the car to any car tire store that sells studded tires, they can replace the missing studs in seconds and would cost little. Not worth fighting with the dealer IMO

Re: studded snow tires fall out?
I think this is pretty normal. Ive never used studded tires but they are illegall in my racing series b/c they can fly out and hurt someone. Our topspeed is only like 60-85mph.
