Any track junkies ... not 1/4 mile.
Just picked up a '90 civic DX, that I would like to setup as a track car, but will occasionally drive on the streets. I was wondering what kind suspension setup you guys are running. Do TEINS make them for these cars? I'm gonna go a B-series motor non-vtec, not sure which one, but saw a 5th gen on the weekend with a B20Z motor at Mosport Park, ripping it pass some bimmers at the BMWCCA school.

You can run teins but are going to need to replace the rear lower control arms with those from an ITR or an 88 Si.

I can't find habib anyplace...
hehe...I crack me up. I WISH i had the money to be more of a track junkie. I'm tryin to get another track day here withing the next month or two i really miss it.
If you wanna check out a badass suspenion, go check out progess suspension (they have a site someplace sorry i don't have it on me right now). Their coilovers they make rock plain and simple. Very well suited for 4th gens, not to bad on the street i suppose but take to racing like ducks to water. They even make spherical ball bushings if you really wanna get crazy. They cater alot to 88-91 civics because they have one for a race car in F production...you can watch Speedchannel when they show SCCA runoffs and you can see the car on TV hehe. Lastly a rear sway bar will do worlds for your handling. ANYWHO, for brakes, the stock system does really well once its built up a little. If you really want more braking power I'd say get bigger front rotors first that would be more helpful than rear disc. My car so far is just bremo OEM rotors, axxis pads, goodridge steel braided lines, ATE dot 4 superblue brake fluid, and i rebuilt my rear drums. On this setup my brakes barely faded at all. Someday i'd like to get EX front disc THEN maybe i'll get CRX or integra rear disc conversion, followed by a integra mastercyclinder...or something along those lines. And finally for the motor, yea I feel for ya in your 1.5...hell my Si was barely able to do anything down the straights, i can't imagine a DX hehe. But its not about straight line power all the time. If your lookin into a good motor to use, like a B18 outta a teg LS would be cheap and with a few light bolt on's...fast enough to scare a few cars on the track. Just be careful, my friend stuck a SiR tranny to his LS and with the torque and short gearing its way to much shifting. Umm...off the top of my head thats all i can recall for ya. If you wanna talk more just post it on up hehe...in the meantime, i'll whore myself out and show a pic of me beating up on two ITB VW GTi's...ok well I only outran them for like 3 seconds till we hit a turn hehe.

Re: I can't find habib anyplace...
thanks Habib. what are the costs like out there? There's about 3 tracks close to me (within 1 hr or 2), so there's a lapping event almost every weekend, costing between $120-$200CDN, between 2-3 groups of 20, 30 mins sessions.
about the suspension, yes, I've also heard great things about Progress Suspensions, I'm going to look into them, and hopefully decide before I go to Cali, so I can pick up a set. You guys/gals are sooo lucky in the US to have access to a lot of products for a great price. Brakes, I figure, there's a lot of wreckers here with the older cars, so the rear disc swap would not be too costly, and wouldn't it be easier to maintain, correct me if i'm wrong. for the fronts, i've just changed over to brembo and PBR metal masters (same as axxis i think) I already had to change a rear brake line, because it started to leak, but will eventually go SS lines. Motor, I spotted a b18a of a '92 teg, and will check it out later. what do you think of the prelude motors of '90-'91? nice pic! Quote:

BMciv: Sorry it took so long to get back school keeps me quite busy lol. Anywho thats awesome you have 3 tracks so close to you. A new one opened like 30-45 mins from me, its about 130-150 bucks there, next closest is 2 hours out into ohio that is about 100 bucks but the track is a little old.
On the brakes, before you go racing I at least recommend a fluid change up to something like a DOT 4 or DOT3/4 mix. Course civic's are so light usually the brakes arn't TOO taxed but every little bit helps and fluid is a fairly cheap and safe mod to do. Lastly on the motors, the teg engine sounds promising, but the prelude motor, eh. I dunno what motors came in those years but most lude engines are put into civics mostly for drag racing hehe so you get the idea. Makes the front end just a bit to heavy to be effective while turning. Any other thoughts i'll try to answer back in a more timly response

I saw the B18A motor, no thanks, it needs a lot of work, though he wanted $400 (motor only), it was a mess. The lude motors I was looking into (I still can't find specs on the motor and swaps) are the B20A5 of the '90-'91 prelude si. I figure they would have a good torque curve, not sure about the weights of these particular motors though, so I think you're right about how it will affect steering. But so far, the B16A seem to be the easiest swap. I dunno about these motors for track use, it's nice to have power throughout the rpm, specially on turns. I guess I just have to keep looking. , but leaning towards a B18A, if I can find a good one. |
