Questions for the DETers

Two questions...

1) Was the SR20DET sold in any American-market car?

2) If an SR20DET is swapped into a car, can it still be California Smog legal?

Thanks, guys.

No. The most common SR20DET that is imported is from the Bluebird SSS AWD. That is the same car as our Stanza and later, Altima. This engine shares a significant number of parts with the USDM SR20DE.

A more rare SR20DET is from the Pulsar GTi-R. This was Nissan's WRC homolugation car from the early 90s. This engine shares few parts with the SR20DE.

It will pass the sniffer, but not the visual.

So, is putting a DET into a car in the U.S. legal?

Technically.... No. Then again, no JDM engine swap is legal.

Well, if and when I get a JDM engine, I'll come find you, Luke, and have you introduce me to the "in" crowd.

No, it's still illegal.

OTOH, that doesn't mean you can't get your car registered and pass inspection... if you know the right people.
