Audio Questions (subs)
Hey all...
Currently working on my sub box, and I had a question about mounting the subs... On some systems, I've seen people mount the subs upside down so that the magnet is outside of the box. Two questions regarding this: 1.) What are the benefits of doing this (or drawbacks if that's the case)? 2.) In order to do this, do you reverse the polarity of the signal wires so that it pulls instead of pushes? My hope is that by doing this, I will be able to increase the internal volume of the enclosure, plus it would look hella tight... I would really appreciate some help on this! Edit: Also, wanted to let you know that what I am building is a sealed fiberglass enclosure for two 10" Kicker Solobaric subs if that makes any difference for mounting them inverted... Thanks, Mike T.

1 disadvantage is that the sub is open and so things can hit it and metal objects may be attracted to the magnet. yes you reverse the wires

Cool. I can deal with that.
Since the speaker cones would be concave instead of convex, does it disperse the bass in a wider range (instead of having a cone shaped propogation area)? Does it give of more bass or less?

I don't think that using the magnet outside the box will work as well as you think. That set up is more of a "free-air" setup, and free-air setups need special free-air subs.

marc-os that is only if he does not reverse the polarity of the woofer if he does then it sucks and doesn't blow out the air so it's creating the same affect as if it was inside the box except now he was more room in the box it shoudl produce the same or maybe more due to space in the box, more bass

Well, they are solobaric subs... I was under the impression (correct me if I'm wrong) that solobaric subs are the same as free-air subs?
