K&N filter, Check engine light on?

I have a 96' tahoe with 136,000 miles. I just istalled a K&N filter, pre-oiled, out of the box. After about 10 miles of driving the "Sevice Engine Soon" light comes on. I am sure it is becaue of the filter, but not sure why? Any suggestions?

Re: K&N filter, Check engine light on?

You got oil on the Mass Air Flow Sensor. The microfine wire inside is very susceptible to contamination. Double check your trouble code to verify, but usually that's the problem after installing those types of filters. They use too much oil on the initial factory oiling. You may have to replace MAF with a new one. I don't think you can "clean" them.

I read on the forums somewhere that a guy would clean the MAF using some non-chlorine brake cleaner? Worth a try if the sensor is already damaged.

Use electrical parts cleaner or the new CRC dedicated maf cleaner, take the K and N off! Of course again, get the code first.

Really? That's good to know. Do you have a part # on the CRC stuff? Would the electronic parts cleaner you might find at Radio Shack work? Thank's for the update.

Re: K&N filter, Check engine light on?

Thank's, Max. Boy, that was a quick reply! I'm multi-tasking at my desk so I have an excuse for screwing off.
Thank's for the info. I never knew you could do that without harming the sensor.

Well be careful don't rough up the hot wire, if necessary and you see carbon or sediment on the wire clean it 2x.

If you take a look at the OEM air intake system it is already has a real good cold air intake system installed on it.
It draws cold /forced cold air from the fender well and grille area.
And already has the best AC delco air filter in it.
So why would you want to change it?

main reason i want aftermarket is because of all the baffles in the ducting from the filter to intake and i want a filter that flows better than a paper filter.

Re: K&N filter, Check engine light on?

AEM makes a intake kit that has a filter that does not use oil, the brute force filter is dry. check out www.aempower.com for more info.

On your first question about no oil type filters. Yes they have them. K&N is the main oiled type paper filter.
As as far as the flow it is hard to beat the OEM design air filter you already have and if it is the big round barell type HD filter better yet and as far as the baffles and restrictions they are there for a good reason.
All filters are all paper unless you go to a oil bath filter used on a lot of industrial equipment.
Do not get fooled with that add of a cold air intake giving X amount of gas mileage and HP.
Your OEM air intake is already cold air and is designed with a few restrictions for a good reason.
For normal driving they will not give you problems and are benifical to the oem itake air design.
But if you are trying to get all or last drop of the HP out of it a large straight type intake may help some.
But make sure it is a true cold air type that pulls air from grille or fender well not just from under the hood.
Also watch out for the ones that pull air from way down below. They will scoop up water to when you hit a water puddle or run in a heavey rain.
Each engine reacts different to modifacations.
Check out this link on what happened to a Honda.

If you change one thing you may have to change some other stuff to.
And remember the intake manifold also has some air restrictions in it.
Here is a link on air filters that may be interesting.

Also a oil filter study link.

good luck MT
