Fram Oil Filters

I posted this eariler to the AF jeep forum, but I wanted to open this up to a larger audience and get more opinions.
=============================

Hi,

I have a 92 Jeep Cherokee with approx. 125,000 miles on it. I change my oil every 3000-3500 miles using Castrol GTX and a Fram oil filter. The engine sounds very good for its mileage, and has as much kick as the day I got it (1994 I believe).

My question concerns the Fram oil filter. Is it true that these filters are just plain crap? I was reading different sources online concerning them, and a few said that they can fail and even cause engine damage! I've got two of them, brand new, sitting in my apartment right now (bought 2 plus the case of oil) and now I'm considering getting rid of the Frams and going with another, possibly Bosch.

Can anyone enlighten me about these filters and whether or not it would do me good to go with a different brand? Back in the day I used to take it to Valvoline / Jiffy / etc. to get my oil changed, but I can't imagine that they ever used a very good quality oil filter either.

Well I have never heard anything bad about the Fram oil filters. I have always used them in my LeBaron and she is pretty close to 150,000 and I have never have any problems that could be related to the oil filter.

I ont know anything about Fram filters, but you guys over there can get Mobil 1 filters (lucky bastards) and they're pretty much the best you can get...

If you care, do a search of the G20 forum for a post by P10DET about his test of oil filters during one of the geekouts.

I've found AC Delco to be among the best. Fram and others don't seem too tough. Since you drive a Jeep, the filter won't be running a risk of hitting anything (unlike a Chevy or Ford). I do like the fact they have filters with grit coating on them so when the oil change places overtighten them it's easier to get them off. Keep in mind that oil change places exist to make money and probably put on whatever filters that were cheapest this month.

Yeah, I don't take my Jeep to the oil change places anymore because it's a lot cheaper for me to do it myself. Plus I always hated how they would try to sell me all these services that they claimed I needed, or $3 air filters for $10 (what a scam).

It seems that I've heard and read of lot of opinions for and against the Frams. I do agree that they aren't of the greatest build qualities. I'll probably go with it this time and maybe see if I can pick a different brand up for the next time. I'm pretty sure the Autozone near where I live sells both Bosch and Mobil1.

I heard also that fram uses Cardboard end caps on some filters (or used to) and so they wern't to strong. I use K&N Oil Filter or Napa Gold. Wix also makes good filters. I work at a express lube place and We use Warner filters or if they ask for the premium filter we hav Mobil 1's.

I think Fram's are fine. I personally use K&N oil filters and pay $10 for the 5X your usual oil filter but I honestly don't think it is anybetter than your cheapest oil filter. Best thing to do is just change your oil and filter when it is time
