Shift Boot
Does anyone know how to install an aftermarket shift boot in a '96 Cavalier? There's a plastic piece holding the stock one on, and if I take it off it doesn't seem like it will go over the new shift boot.

You have to take off the console by the shifter, but before you can do this, you need to take off the shift knob. After you take it off, underneath there is a plastic square that looks like it is molded to the shift boot, which holds it to the console.

Re: Shift Boot
hey pbfreak, my friend got his boot and knob off... thanks to u! i guess he "broke off" the plastic piece u are talking about. he said he used a butter knife to snap off the "rivits" holding the boot. he said he didnt break off the whole plastic part. i asked him if it interfered with him shifting or anything and he said no. so i guess it is the best way to go. hope this works for u! let me know how u make out.
Thanks for ur help! |

Alright, thanks. When he put on the new boot, did he just put that plastic piece back on over the rivets so it would stay in place?

Re: Shift Boot
i asked him yesterday at work and he said he used a rubber band to attach the boot to the plastic part. im thinking u might be able to use krazy glue or super glue to attach them together. hope this helps

Re: Shift Boot
Thanks for your help, I finally got the rivets to come off after about 45 minutes. The shift boot I bought just went over the plastic piece so there was no need for glue or anything. Once again, thanks.
