Vette Roadster

This is a project I started a couple years ago and just now exhumed in order to finish. It's an R-M kit which i intended to make a mild custom of with Tamiya Gunmetal body, red/black interior and Fujimi 18" OZ Superturismo wheels which definitely beat the stock wheels but (i think) still fit the car.

While giving this old build the once over, i spotted a small depression on the hood. I tried to gently level the paint, but as you can see, it changed the depth of the paint too much--oh well, a hood is easy to respray. The blemish is in the middle-right.

Here i dry-fit the wheels for an idea of the look. I had a heck of a time grinding out the backs of the rims to fit on the R-M uprights!

Btw, the green tape is to keep the intake manifold from scratching when i'm working on the chassis. (It happened on my last 'Vette)

A bit of an update:

I was thinking of making it a red/black mix, so i masked off some interior parts and airbrushed them satin black (tho they came out a bit too shiny--hmm...).

I also had an accident with my hood--while the paint was drying, something fell on it, so out came the sandpaper Oh well.

Hey, Loving the color scheme you are doing, and the interior two tone should look awsome. Rims suit this car well, keep up the good work

I finally got the interior sprayed right--the first time, i used MM Acryl Semi-Gloss Black which ended up to shiny. So i mixed Tamiya Semi-Gloss and Flat Black, which turned out pretty good. The masking lines turned out sharp for the most part, except for pulling up a bit of red (time for some touch-up).

A test fit of the interior:

Re: Vette Roadster

I was going to say... that green tape keeps dirt and debris out of the intake!!! I did the same thing on my 1:1 f100, even used green tape!!!! hahaha

I like it. those wheels look awesome on that color, and car. I run the same wheels on my vette on Gran Turismo!!! haha

I need to bust out my vettes and get to work on them. I started mine about 10 years ago and put it away...just never got too thrilled with it.

Here's some pics from yesterday's work. I finally finished the interior and mated it with the chassis. Because I painted and partially assembled the chassis a year ago, it's nothing special so no pics.

My housemate figured the seats were a bit plain, so i took his suggestion of attempting to paint the stitching and scraping the red off the Corvette script. I think it worked...

I also finished off a few details and put in a bit of work matching colors, but it looks like an interior i'd love to own in 1:1--enjoy!

More progress from the weekend:

I'm starting to wrap up this build and knocking off the details, so i tackled the painting of the windshield surrounds. I've hand-painted many of these and some of them come out quite good, but it's such tedious work! So, i took the still-tedious but different approach of cutting my own mask. Here I've already sprayed, and i was even ambitious enough to mask off the little window in the lower driver's side where a factory (VIN, perhaps?) number is pasted.

Below, the results: perhaps not worthy of bragging, but a little touch-up and it'll look great.

I also got around to polishing the body. The paint was fairly level in most places, so i usually started with a bit of MicroMesh 6000, then 8000 and 12000, then rubbed it out with Tamiya Compound (my new best tool ) No studio quality (or feeble attempt at such) pics for you--just a couple to tease.

I then took some mesh from the Tamiya 360 Modena and covered the front fascia intakes, instead of scratchbuilding fog-lights.

Here the windshield is mated to the body

Ahh, blinkers! Well, for the first time, i used BMF to back the lenses, and it although BMF is sometimes finicky to use, I had no problems

I did the same with the tail-lights, and i think the results beat the heck out of silver, white, or other metallic paints! Takes a few minutes to get right, though--i cut around the lenses to get the right size, and after adjusting the placing, hardly any trimming was needed. The glue (Testors clear parts glue) didn't work out the best, though--i looked at the taillights today and there were bubbles underneath Anyone know how to remedy this?

Oh well, all in all, a rather productive couple of days. I might be able to finish this one off next weekend: i've still got the fuel rail covers to redo before i can finish detailing the engine bay--DetailMaster CF doesn't show up well over black paint, let me tell you.

Re: Vette Roadster

I'm jealous of that shine!!
Tha's a really nice tip with the VIN window! I haven't seen it done before. If I weren't into older cars so much, I would defininately "borrow" that idea
Bummer on the reart lights. You painted over teh BMF, right? If you think you can't get rid of the bubbles, couldn't you just peel off the BMF and do it again?
