Unhappy g20 engine noise

1993.5 G20--when engine is cold it sounds fine--After it warms up a clanking sound is coming from the front of the engine--at times it sounds internal and at times external--like a pulley or something--the car runs well-it has new plugs and wires but when you open the hood you hear this sound---could it be a valve ?

Engine has 72000 miles

Yah probably tensioner slap...check out www.se-r.net there is some stuff on there about it. It applies to the SR20 on our cars too.

will this cause damage until I get it fixed? I may have to put a few hundred miles on it until I have time to repair

I drove my 91 G like that for nearly 80,000km like that. No problem. The tensioner was the problem but The chains are so string and I've never heard of a tensioner completely going

The tensioner adjusts itself, or it is supposed to. Pre 94 there was a different design that isnt' good, and on any high mileage car it should be replaced as well. You can find any info you need about it at http://www.se-r.net
