Shift Lock

So I am a bit lost here. Co-worker so nicely somehow locked up her engine. (don't ask me how)

Since I am replacing the engine for her she also told me she is having issues with the shift lock. Seems as though it just screwed up. She was using the screw driver in the access hole (sounds dirty i know) for a while but i could get it to work when I tried it.

Is this a common problem with these cars? If so what is done to make them work again?
