96 GA hesitates
I noticed a problem on my 96 GA yesterday while driving on the interstate. I was doing about 80 when the car suddenly hesitated, the tach went down to almost 500 rpms and shook for a second, then it shot back up to normal. This only happened while I was going above 80 though, if I stayed under 80 it worked fine. I stuck a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in it this morning wondering if possibly that could solve the problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

that sounds like the same problem I was having... if it is, it will continuously get worse. Change the spark plugs, put some good quality plugs in and definitly change the fuel filter, between the two of those things, my problem was solved.

My '98 Grand Am was and still is doing exactly that. We took it in and they said it needed a new fuel pump. The very day after we paid big bucks to that the fuel pump replaced, it started doing it all over again. Then they said well maybe it needs new fuel injectors (even tho they cleaned them when they changed the fuel pump! We haven't taken it back yet because the problem is somewhat intermittent and I wanted to make sure it happens when they drive it so it can be properly diagnosed. It's very frustrating.

I was told all the same things, it ended up being a $5 fuel pump that I changed myself
EDIT - - fuel filter not fuel pump |

Re: 96 GA hesitates
I've replaced the fuel filter on it along with a crank position sensor, still does it but I've started to accept it, I can kind of sense when it's about to do it and as long as I don't try to accelarate it's fine. After a little bit, it's fine and I can accelerate as normal. I'll worry about it if it strands me. If I lived in a major city with freeways and such, I wouldn't even think about driving it. By the way I had an old 89 Firebird that did something similar, the mechanic replaced the hall/effect sensor and that fixed it right up, is there a similar sensor on a GA?

stay under the speed limit, maybe it's your conscience trying to save your driving record.
