Gt or Lx 5.0, What's the difference?

hey fellas, I'm usually in the thunderbird or supra forum, but I wanted some advice... I want to buy an 87-93 mustang, but I have a question.. What is the difference between the Lx 5.0 version, and the Gt version? Just wondering like any features, performance, etc, and some possible upgrade for the car, (where can I find better aftermarket lights and stuff made espically for this type of car?) Also if there are any little things that are known to go out on mustangs so I can check before buying the car, engine/tranny issues, suspension, etc. Thanks

GT is mostly just a trim package. Underneath, the cars are the same, they just have different bumper covers and stuff like that. I think the GT's have stiffer springs also.

You can find foxbody mustang (79-93) stuff everywhere.

Word is the lx's are faster due to less weight. Personally I like the looks of the gt better.

Another difference is the body styles available. Along with saving weight on the trim package, the LX in the 2 door sedan comes in pounds lighter than the GT. But they are the same underneath, including the spring rates.

My '89 LX 5 speed needed a tranny rebuild at 59,500 miles (under warranty) along with new u-joints. The factory joints don't have grease fittings. It also needed a fuel pump, water pump and EGR valve position sensor. Beyond that the rest has been either maintenance or performance upgrades. At 135,000 I'm still very satisfied.

hmm.. i like the cheap insurance idea.. i think I could just but the lx, and go to a junkyard and find me some othe gt bumpers/exhaust... I'm not looking for which is fastest, but what looks best.

Well looks are subjective so you should just get the one you like the looks of best and there is no huge difference between the types as far as how fast they are.

Personally, I like the 93 Cobra look. It's basically a GT front end, GT sides, and a slightly modified LX rear (the cobra rear blends with the GT sideskirts better than the LX rear does). The only two parts on the GT's that I don't like is the rear bumper and the "cheesegrater" taillights.
LX rear + LX taillights =

93 Cobra:

GT bumper and 'cheesegrater' lights:

LX bumper and LX lights:

im not sure which ones you are talking about, but a junkyard for used ones or 50resto.com for new ones.

lets just say, LX is for the serious racer, while GT is for the occasional adrenaline run/daily driver. Most LXs are 4 cylinders, so it has low insurance rates.

I must say the GT does look a hell of a lot better since it has the ground effects, I have an 86 GT so it doesnt have the same effects as an 87 would have but I recently raced a 93 lx notchback....basically the body of a convertible but with a hard time and its lighter than my 86 GT Hatch.....It also looks nice if you do the right thing to it.
