Has anyone had a problem with their A/C compressor making a noise like a card slapping against the spokes of a bike. I replaced the compressor once and flushed the entire system out and replaced all small parts. But it started making the same noise again. I was once told by a GM mechanic that they seem to replace a lot of compressors on the 94 model year. Something to do with it being the conversion year from R12 to R134 and the compressors can't handle the higher pressure. If anyone has had the same problem or knows the fix, please could you let me know.
1994 2500 Suburban W/454 and rear air. Thanks Lossing his cool (air) Dave |

Re: Suburban A/C compressor noise
I have a 1994 1500 Suburban. I just had to put a/c compressor #3 on this past summer. A day after #3 was on it developed a noise similar to what you described. I took it back to the mech, they could not duplicate it but they swapped out a cycling switch and it has worked fine since. We use the heck out of our a/c here, I'm looking forward to dropping $1000 on another one in a couple years.

Thanks for the info. I'll check into that maybe it will help. I did manage to get a lifetime warrenty on the compressor if it is bad. So hopefully it won't cost a ton to fix.

My Sub is a 3/4 ton. But I think I would start looking at the differential, rear brakes, and all mounting points to see if something is broke or has come loose. If you have something dragging inside the brake drum of in the differential that might explain the sluggishness.

You could try putting the rear up on jack stands putting it in neutral and spin the rear wheels to see if theres any drag. If you do feel abnormal drag drop the driveline to eliminate the tranny. Or you could also take the differential cover off and check for broken or loose parts around your ring and pinnion but its messy. At least that way you could change your gear lube

Re: Suburban A/C compressor noise
I have a '94 C1500 2WD 350
On a recent trip I noticed the sound you described, like the fan touching the shrowd. Then rear air stopped cooling. The next day the front stopped cooling. Checked charge but it had good pressure. From what you said it sounds like the compressor is gone. Is this something I can do myself? I know about the EPA issues. Money is the big issue. |

Re: Suburban A/C compressor noise
You can but its a big job, I had to flush all the lines replace the orfice tube all the o rings. plus you have to have a vacuum pump to evacuate the system before you recharge to make sure there's no moisture in the system. It's not a novice mechanic job thats for sure. It took me most of the day. but I spent only $400 instead of the $1200 the shop wanted!
