porsche gt3
some of you might have caught my thread on the main board about my gt3 model.
in case you missed it, i've recently been buying up some models of cars that i like one of these is of a dino 246 gt which i want to open the doors on. as i've never done anything like this before (i've only just started to build model cars) i thought i'd give it a try on a nice cheap gt3 kit that i found in hk. here's what i've done so far. 1) very painfully removed the doors scratching up the body work and making lots of small cracks in the process. 2) both sets of doors removed and inside trim also cut free. 3) did a really bad job of cutting the window. lots of cracks on this one and bad scratches on the other one. 4) started on one door. decided to just hide the scratched window and make as if it's an 'open window'. 5) both doors done (almost). strips of plastic to fill the big holes and putty to fill the gaps. windows are taped in preparation for painting. incidentally, does anyone have any good pics of the doors of a real gt3 for reference? thanks in advance. 6) body and undertray/chassis primered and a couple of coats of paint applied. not a brilliant job.... a bit patchy. needs a bit of sanding and respray. 7) testing the fit of the doors. they haven't been painted yet so i'll probably have to sand off some of the edges for door/body/paint gap. well, that's it so far. i'll let you know how it goes. as usual, if anyone has any insights on this kinda job or any advice otherwise, please let me know. the more help the better. thanks in advance.

Hm. The pictures stopped coming after #3. Looks like a cool project though.
Hey supraman89! Your name is cool cuz it's like superman only SUPRA man and supra's are cool so it's nice. EDIT: Never mind, dude. The pics are showing now. Awesome job, but too bad about the window.

Re: porsche gt3
well, when you get up real close you can see lots of little messy bits.
hopefully, i get better at this before i do the surgery on my 246 gt. just out of interest, is there much point in trying to replicate the real door hinge or am i better off just making a simple rod/sleeve type hinge for it?

***update***
final coat of paint on body. little bit of problem as i spilt some diclorylmethane on the leftside of the rear bumber. it ate through everything.... two coats on top seemed to cover everything up though. undertray is also now painted as well as some parts of the suspension. bigger pic of the body with painted door in for a test fit. still tinkering with little bits of rod and tube for the hinge. still trying to decipher supraboy's method from the other thread. anyway, anyone got any ideas how to join aluminium to the body or perhaps some clever bit of sculpting with plastic and putty....

Re: porsche gt3
Hmmm! looks good!
Joining aluminium tube and plastic? Easy (but take care of your fingers): CA glue!

Re: porsche gt3
i've given up on using the aluminium tube.
gonna drill a hole in a 'useless' bit of sprue and use that as a female hinge part. also quite tempted to actually replicate the hinge method on the fujimi lp400, with the retaining rod so taht the door doesn't swing completely free. guess i'm going to have to dust off that dremel!

Re: porsche gt3
ok, been a while trying lots of hinge designs and have finally managed to get a satisfactory movement.
door closed door open again, but rear 3/4 view open door from the rear close up(ish) of the final hinge design. two different sleeves to hold door onto body because of the akward door shape. also, the curves of the body made the first hinge 'unstable'. not sure of you can see it clearly. will try to get a little drawing of this later... kinda screwed up the panels. had to remove a lot of the platis until the leading edge was very thin so that the door could clear the body when it swings open. now i just got to finish the other door and make a start on the interior....
