I purchased a 1983 BMW 733i for my daughter and the mechanic replaced the Power Steering Gear Box (Good from slavage yard, new power steering pump (filled it with power steering fluid; I'm told that it should have had ATF instead), new hoses for gear box and pump, all steering lines flushed. (This car has hydraboost). After all this was done the mechanic said the 'Assist' for the steering was not working (when we slow down to turn a corner we do not have any power stering, once engine was rev'd up the power steering comes back). After driving the car for a few days we noticed the the power steering unit is loud and the power steering fluid is hot.
Can someone please help me figure out what the problem may be.... I'm wondering is there a way I can determine if the steering gear box, power steering pump or booster is defective. Also I'm told that the car may need a 'brake bomb'. Is there a way that I can determine if a 'brake bomb' is needed and are they difficult to replace? Tell me what you think...thanks

Re: Steering Problem on 1983 BMW 733i
I would think the place to start is to get the proper type fluid in and the old stuff flushed out. I know the 88-94 7-series cars use a special fluid, Pentosin. The cap for the power steering should tell you the proper fluid to use.
I found this quote about "brake bombs" while searching the archives of www.roadfly.com, "...the infamous Brake Booster (Bomb) problem. If the brake pedal feels rock hard and no braking apparent without releasing and reapplying the brakes, I would say the bomb is defective." |
