Question fuses keep blowing

Hey!

I just bought a 97 sunfire about a week ago and I have had no problems with it so far except for the fact that I have no horn. It took me and my dad awhile to figure out which fuse it was connected to( the person that sold me the car gave me a 99 manual :s) So finally wehen we figured it out it was connected to the ciggarette lighter thingy it was off to buy some fuses. So of course naturally I buy all the fuses for the damn car...stupid mini thingys are expencive! but thats besides the point, so anyways it calls for a 15a so put it in it blows, so we try a 10a it blows after about trying just about every fuse and it blowing we gave up....does anybody know possibly what the problem could be? thanks

Rebecca

Well first of all you shouldn't need a manual to read the fuse box. It should be on the lid of the fuse box. If you take off the lid then there should be a little diagram on the other side of it telling you which fuse goes to what. If the fuses kept blowing then you might have other electircal problems in the wiring of your horn. Fuses are made to keep other things from getting fried when too much current is flowing through. So you should probably have it looked at by a proffessional.

You have a definate short to ground on the circuit that blows the fuse.
DO NOT install a fuse higher than the recommended amp rating for that circuit!
Look inside the cigar lighter assembly for a penny, dime or any other object that may have dropped into it, this could cause your short.
The fuse box diagram will not tell you all the circuits that fuse powers.
I would recommend taking your car to a knowledgable technician to have this one diagnosed

Hey there--just joined this forum looking for some advice on my '97 sunfire too! Looks like you've figured out a fix for the fuse, but if anyone else has that happen, I had the same problem. I figured out that the fuse would only blow when the cigarette lighter was actually pushed in. I tried it myself--blew the horn while pushing in the lighter and poof--no more horn. Needless to say, I bought my last fuse (of many) that day and have never used the lighter again. I have not tried other accessories in the outlet, so I don't know if it's just the lighter or if it would happen with anything you plug in.

Good luck with your car! I bought mine new, and it now has 130,000 miles on it. Just starting to have some not so small *issues* with it, but seeing the way I've treated it over the years, I can't complain.
