Arrow 99 Tercel - Starter motor came on while driving

99 Tercel 82,000 K's

A few days ago my wife and I were driving into work and the parking brake light came on with the frequent screech sound(if you have ever turned the ignition key while the engine is running kind of sound) and we then noticed that a whirring sound and it became slightly higher pitched within a very short time.

The occaisional screech sound re-occured prior to finding a good place to pull over. When starting the car, a screech or two was heard but the starter motor was still running.

The next day I tried starting the car and all I got was a click sound. I let it sit for a day or so and sure enough it started right up.

Should I bother replacing the starter motor, or wait until it dies ?

Anyone know how to get the error codes off a 99 tercel ?

Thanks all,
