91 Standard hatch questions
OK I turned 16 2 weeks ago and i get my liscence on april 21, so ive started looking for a car, well yesterday my pops told me that he saw a hatch at a little carlot, one of the many scattered around. Today we went and looked at it, and due to my masterful knowledge (jk jk) i determined that it was a stardard model cause its a 4 speed. But its in pretty good condition externally (its sunday so no salespeople)...with 196k miles. Since hondas run forever (hah) i told my dad that the mileage wasnt much of a problem. So assuming its in half way decent running condition, i may get it sometime soon. now time for the questions:
In stock form, what does this car run? 19's or something crazy geo-metro like? with 196k miles on the stock engine, is it worth it to do a mpfi conversion on it? is it required if i do an engine swap? What are the gains like? Whats the average cost of a d16z6 with tranny and all? Is this a good somewhat easy swap that could be sone in a school autoshop? Lastly, what would it take to be able to beat a 98 DOHC v6 taurus? cause ive talked a bunch of smack to my good friend about honda power!

I'd say that's about right. This was the first gerbal-powered engine honda ever made. It pumps out a massive 70 hp. That's about 50-60 hp to the wheels of course. Quote:
Don't even bother with a conversion. I recommend a D16Z6 swap. Quote:
In my opinion this is a very good swap. It will bolt right in to your engine compartment. No cutting or welding necessary. This engine can and has been taken to 450 HP with a rebuilt bottom-end and a turbo. I bought my Z6 engine for $400. You could get an Si or ZC cable tranny for $150-$200. You will also need an ECU, wiring harness, and distributor. Quote:

Re: 91 Standard hatch questions
The MPFI is required when doing a swap, so if your like me and don't have alot of cash, go ahead and do the multi port swap now so that you don't have to worry about it later. I am not doing b16's or none of that crazy stuff. I just want a direct drop in and go. I had a b18 that I was gonna do, but it began to get costly because I wanted it done right. So it either DOHC ZC or D16(both built) for me. Good Luck

Re: 91 Standard hatch questions
hey if u get that, ull have the same thing as me (assuming its red)
like azhab said, dont waste ur time with mpfi swap, just go straight to the motor swap, i would suggest a dohc zc swap which u cant get everything for the swap for less than 700, and u wouldn't have to worry about hooking up anykind of vtec

Re: 91 Standard hatch questions
well I guess ya'll are partly right, the reason I am doing the Mpfi swap before the enging swap, is that I am having alot of issues with my intake mani. things need to be replaced and for the prices I might as well do the swap since I have the parts, then 3-4 mo. down the road swap my engine on in.

Hah yeah its red!
hmmm.....if i were to get the z6, what is required for vtec hookup? selenoid (sp), vtec controller-what? Im pretty intent on getting the Z6 and just hookin up a Si cable tranny like ahzab33. Total, what woudl be the cost? like 100-200 for tranny, 300-400 for engine, 50-100 misc. sound bout right? I may be getting ahead of myself here since i dont have the car yet, but since im going to join the 4g family whether its with this car or not, i want to go ahead and have the knowledge!

Re: 91 Standard hatch questions
i have an 89 civic std with the zc swap 2 weeks old. i've so far beat a lot of cars. i ran 9.6 in the 1/8th. i've only spent 1500 for engine/tranny/ ecu/flywheel 8.8/ centerforce dual friction clutch/fuelpump/filter/ all seals and gaskets/ polyurethene inserts/ tach./axels/ steering knuckle/hub/ some people think it's too much but for $2500 including car that can take mustangs down. it's not bad. i'll give you the places i ordered stuff from if you want good prices.

Was that with the standard tranny? if not, if i were to go ahead and drop in a Si tranny (does it matter whether its a 4g civic si or a 2nd gen crx si tranny or is there no difference?) would i at least hit 17's? hah hah good stuffMy dad ran down to the carlot this afternoon, and the hatch was in the garage there. Apparently they had just gotten it and hadnt even inspected it yet. He asked the woman (it was a husband/wife operation-mechanic/salesperson) how much and she said $1.5k....this was a pre-inspected looks-kinda-rich-so-i-will-throw-out-a-high-ballpark-figure-in-hope-he-will-buy kinda deals...my pops explained that his kid (me hah hah) just turned 16 and this would be his first car and this is something that he really wanted, so the woman said that she would call us after the inspection and cleanup to give us a good price...i think 800 in cash would look mighty good for a 91 standard Oh yeah on a last note, i think if i get it, ill go ahead and do the mpfi swap to get aquained with the honda way of things-whats required? intake manifold, throttlebody, fuel rail, injectors, resistor box (hell i dont even know what that is i just did some research and saw something about it) ecu and some wiring/sodering? anyhting else? thanks!
