Info On catalytic converter

I don't really own any car or anything like that but i just wanted to know something about catalytic converter. If you remove it its illegal here in Illinois. WHY? and what does catalytic converter do when you remove?

Ya, the convertor is on the vehical for emissions reasons. By federal law all cars MUST have the convertor on now. So, I guess thats it. I know people who just hack the whole thing off and run straight headers. Have fun, hope I answered the question.

Most new cars have what is called a three way catalytic converter. What it does is that it convert CO, HC and NOx into substances that are more "healty" like CO2, N2 and H2O.

The catalytic converter has a core with a very large surface area which can be made from ceramics or stainless steel. This surface is then coated with noble metals that work as a catalyst like platinum.
