96 taurus need help for halfshaft removal
Hello,
I have a 96 taurus and I need to remove the passenger side halfshaft from the transmission. I already have boughten a new one and I see that it has a retaining ring on the splined shaft. I didn't try prying on it because of that reason. I'm assuming I'll have to remove the trans cover to remove the ring, but I'm not sure. Please let me know what is the correct way to accomplish this task. Also, if there are any tips or suggestions for installation or is it simple push it in? One last thing, What is the correct torque in ft lbs on the halfshaft nut on the other on in the knuckle? Thanks Dan |

Re: 96 taurus need help for halfshaft removal
Just pry the axle out of the transmission with a pry bar. Do not remove any covers. Well, unless you want to service the trans.
You need to swing the steering knuckle out of the way, one way or another. Easiest is the lower ball joint, but if anyones been around that ball joint, chances are, you will not get that thing off. Because they have over torqued it. So now it won't press out of lower control arm. So then you have to pull the lower strut bolts and go that way. Or fight the ball joint and buy a new one of those also. Pull strut rod. I press tie rod off knuckle also, but you don't have too. Just seems easier to swing knuckle out of your way. Adds about 1 min. R&R It(the axle) pretty much just pushes in. You should at least get a manual with the torque specs. ![]() Axle nut 190 ft lbs ball joint nut 65 ft lbs lug nut 100 ft lbs Stabilizer joint 70ft lbs good luck Stay cool |
