Transfer case swap in '84 Cherokee

I have an '84 Cherokee with a 2.8 liter V6 and the stock 3 speed automatic trans. I would like to swap the troublesome New Process 229 transfer case ('Selec-Trac full time 4 wheel drive) with the part time 4 wheel drive transfer case (Command Trac), that was available in these Jeeps.
As I recall, the Command Trac transfer case was the base model and the Selec Trac was optional.
It this a straight bolt in? Are the mounts different? Will the existing drive shafts and shift linkage work?
My SelecTrac case uses a mechanical lever for high low and a stupid vaccuum switch for 2or4 wheel drive. It looks to me like the Command Trac has just a lever.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Transfer case swap in '84 Cherokee

unfortunatly if you change from a NP229 to the weaker counterpart (NP209) you will have to change the front axle. in jeeps with selc-trac the front axle is a slightly different ratio than in the back and on command-trac jeeps the axles are the same ratio. otherwise the swap is bolt-in and very easy. the vaccum lines should be there on older command-trac jeeps but they stopped using the dissconect in the early 90's that is something you might consider swaping out as well.

Thank you for the reply. It's been 6 months since this post, but in my usual lightning speed I have not done anything about this situation. It seems as if its easier just to get the original 229 case working right.
