Production of Culture and movie theaters

i have a report to do for my popular culture class. it concerns marketing tactics that go after the customer subliminally(sp?). for example: the most commonly sold products at a supermarket are milk, eggs, juice etc. so those items are placed at the back of the store. their strategy is that they hope you will buy other items on impulse as you pass through the store. Anyone who's read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser knows what i'm talking about

i was given the assignment of a local movie theater and their marketing strategies(like the rule that no outside food is permitted and then they charge you $4.00 for a medium soda) I have most of what i need to talk about but i'm having trouble meeting the 5 page requirement. i'm going to talk about the food situation, location of the arcade games and the crane's with prizes and such, the fact that everything offered at the concession stand is either a coca-cola or mars candy product. Has anyone worked at a movie theater and have any dirt they can divulge to me? As i have it now i'm lookin at a "C" paper, which just isn't gonna fly with me. This thing's due monday and i'd really appreciate some pointers.

How about the ads for food that run before the movie starts? How about the product placement of food/drinks IN the actual movie?

hell yeah, that's exactly the type of stuff i'm looking for, thank you. i'm also gonna talk about how all up and down Rt.9 (the road the mall/movie theater is on) there are 4 very large display signs showing the movies playing and their start times.

i was interested to know how the previews are chosen before the movie starts. i wonder if they bid on what previews are played prior to which movie based on ticket sale expectations, but no one could gimme that info. these companies are very reluctant to give away that kind of information.

What about the ventilation system and how it's set up so that you can smell the popcorn while watching the movie so that you get hungry for popcorn?

Re: Production of Culture and movie theaters

I'm not sure that movie theatres do the scent through the vents thing anymore, because some people are allergic to the false scents.

Re: Production of Culture and movie theaters

this is all stuff i have to look for when i go. if i don't see it i won't include it for my report or i'll make a little blurb about myths or things that i couldn't prove myself but are said to be true.
