I'm the guy who just bought the 98,000 mile '94 G20t with the bad 5th gear (other gears & synchros feel fine). A local tranny shop gave me a quote for repairs and I need your collective opinion as to the value of it.

Here's the breakdown of the prices quoted:

> remanufactured transmission: $2,267 + installation is extra.


........or, Another option:

> The shop rebuilds entire tranny themselves (since they're opening up gearbox anyway) with a bearing & synchro kit ($1,420 parts) + labor is extra

Also, I asked for a quote on clutch replacement at same time & here's the figures:

> clutch parts: $389
>transmission mounts: $450 !!!!
> labor cost for tranny rebuild & clutch replacement $600


If this shop does the entire rebuild + clutch replacement + new tranny mounts, the total comes to over $2900 !!!.

Has anyone out there experienced similar prices for such work? Would I be best off with just a junkyard transmission, and what prices would I be looking at?

The guy at the tranny shop says that my tranny is likely NOT a direct swap for an SE-R or 200SX transmission. I thought otherwise, but does anyone know for sure? Before I give him the go-ahead on the repairs, I wanted to check with my new "forum friends". Your advice prior to Monday would be very helpful. Thanks!!!!! -Don

Fifth Gear pop-out

I just surfed over to SR20DE.net and found some info on a common G20 malady called "fifth gear pop-out", where the lever won't stay in 5th gear.

Anyone have this happen to them? If so, would this problem damage the rest of the tranny, too? If not, I'll just have the shop fix the 5th gear & synchro and assume the remainder of the gearbox is fine.

Damn, for that price you could get a SR20DET dropped in, with a new tranny attached to that. With what I have heard, only the synchro would need to be replaced. Do not pay that price period. You could also put another tranny from a 200sx, sentra in there also. Man, 2900, jeez, outragous. You could buy a whole new, lower mileage tranny and put it on yourself. Man. I dont mean to take hits from AF forum, but, try posting this on the site listed in my signature. You will get a faster response, and probably more detailed. But, whatever you do, dont pay that price.

Technically the SE-R and G20 trannies are not direct swaps. The difference is in the gear ratios.

tranny's on eBay

There's a guy on ebay that has TONS of used tranny's for sale. and a couple of complete engines WITH transmissions for sale right now for a lot less than that. I have seen a few recently go for between 1100 and 2000 with engine tranny ecu harness etc....

By the way...I was just offered to have a sr20det engine installed including everything....for less than you were quted to fix your transmission. That whole thing sounds like a COMPLETE joke....the prices don;t make sense at all.

Thanks to all who responded. I called around & found that the shop I relied on was putting HUGE markups on parts. They lost mucho credibility with that move, since I know they get their stuff at wholesale.

I'm sure they don't like how I called around & priced everything, but I finally did let them continue on my car. I'll at least be getting a new clutch and mounts to go w/ the rebuilt 5th gear.

I've owned it for a whole week now, and have only driven the car a few miles. I can't wait to get it back from the shop.

By the way, the car has MOMO Quasars (14" x 6") all around, but I'm missing a center cap on one wheel. Anyone know where to find such a part?

Anyone interested in selling their factory (shiny & straight) rims? I'll be needing a set to mount a 2nd set of tires to.
