I am having some troubles with my 97 gt. Yestarday on my way home from work out of the blue at a stop light my car started idleing really choppy then stalled and the check engine light came on. It started back up but still ran like poo. While stepping on gas felt like it was not getting the normal power i Do and coming to stops had to put my car in neutral and keep foot on gas to prevent from stalling. Now keep in mind it is winter and has been bitterly cold.. I am thinking water in the gas?? fuel filter?? or fuel pressue regulator?? Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with my car?? Please help if you can.. thank you
PS This morning after letting the car sit all night i started it and it ran fine again.. But the check engine light is still on. |

Re: Idle rough then stalling
This kinda sounds familiar to what happened to my 88 firebird. I had to do the same thing when coming to a red light, had to throw it in neutral and had to keep it running or it'd die out. I think the problem was the distributer. But I guess it could be many things, like the distributer, or the fuel filter, or maybe even the pump. My pump went bad on my firebird one night right after i got home from being an hour away from home, so i was lucky it died when i got home lol.

Re: Idle rough then stalling
could be your fuel pump, or injectors, maybe not getting enough gas into your engine. I would also check out the fuel pressure regulator as well.

Bigfoot kevin, Thanks for the info I will go check those things out.. I think i am going to start with some dry gas and a new fuel filter and then go from there.. it is negaive 15 degrees out today so i want to spent the least amount of time out there.. and i don't think I have a distributor i think the GP use what i would call a coil pack. (don't know the proper name for it).. But thank you

If the ses light came on then there might be a code in the PCM. Go to AutoZone and have them scan the car for you.

Re: Idle rough then stalling
Correct, if SES was one get the codes. Safest, would point resources where the real needs are developing...
