Question Some Questions...Please answer!

1) If I put a 14b turbo in my 93GS auto tranny, how much gain am I expecting? If it is different with a 5spd, how much am I losing?

2) How much can I push the 14b using my non turbo engine?

3) If I install the turbo, do I have to remove the AC?

4) If i go to a junk yard and buy the parts for the conversion, how do I check for "shaft play" and other things I tend to hear online to make sure I get good parts?

5) I'm going to do the compression test and leak down test this weekend, how do I check if the "axles have exessive play" on them?

6) Sometimes when I brake really fast my car tends to be about to turn off and has in some cases, though this happens maybe once every 2 weeks or even once a month, this also happens when Im going to accelerate from a dead stop (less often than the braking).

Thanks a lot in advance!

-Ken

A 5 spd will make up to 300 whp on a 14b (extreme example, but it happens). An auto may do 275 or so. I dont know the exact loss, but its substantial. So subtract whatever a GS makes from 275, and there is the *potential* power gain. A stock turbo DSM makes ~200 hp, so that will be a more realistic "right now" comparison. But you can build up to the 275 number as you go along, the same way the owner of a turbo dsm would. This ALL assumes the internals can take it. I dont know what your plans are in that department.

I have no idea what the NT 4g63 (you have the 2 liter right?) can handle for boost. Most NT motors dont fair well with over 10 psi though. The good news is turbo pistons should drop right in, and I think they use the same rods, strangely enough, but double check that, dont just listen to me Or, for about 500 bucks you can pick up a nice turbo block and drop it in. Unlike 2Gs, you cna put a turbo 4g63 in a NT car. I believe there is a writeup on it on tooners. With a turbo 4g63, the 14b will do well up to 25 psi (race gas).

No.

Grap the compressor wheel through the inlet, and give it a wobble. It should move, but not very much at all. Also, push it in and out, to check for thrust bearing wear. This is even worse. Again, it shouldnt move much, but you will feel a slight movement on a good turbo.

I have no idea. I dont worry about axles until I break them, or they start to click on turns.

I'm willing to be these are actually two seperate problems, though they seem to be the same. Does your speed sensor work properly? Get the codes from teh ECU and see if there is one for speed sensor. It wont trigger a CEL, but it can cause stalling when the car comes to a stop. This is for 5 spd cars, not sure if it also applies to autos, but its worth lokking into. Otherwise, just make sure the idle speed is correct, etc.

I'm no auto tranny expert, and I have never personally done a turbo conversion. Always try to talk to people that have already done what you are trying to do. When it comes to turbo 5 psds, I've done almost everything, so I have plenty of experience there. But not in this case Good luck.
