E-Tec - what does the E stand for?

Is the E-Tec a "ripoff" of Honda's V-Tec? I can tell on the freeways that when I gas it, I can tell I get a "boost" but without a tach, I think it's in the higher RPM range than I'd like. So anyways, what is the E-Tec? I ave an 02 Lanos with 6K miles and to my surprise, for a little engine ( I had a 2.0 '99 Neon before the Lanos ) it MOVES!
