Angry Nissan Primera GX 2.0 TD - stalling problem

Every time I start my car it starts and idles fine. After a couple of minutes the engine starts to run erratically and the rev counter bounces up and down as if its revving itself before finally stalling altogether. The problem continues as I start to drive but the dissapears after I have driven for some distance. The distance varies for some reason. I could drive for 2 mile and it fine or it could take 8 - 10 mile for the problem goes away. Anyone else had this? How do I fix it?
