4g63 questions

I was hoping that someone here knows about the different models of 4g63 that were produced here in America. Were there any built with variable valve timing or knock sensor/spark advance? Is the 4g63 really as beefy as they say it is because I have heard people clame 500 out of a stock block!!! I know I have seen a 700 hp racing 4g63 with full racing upgrades, but are the stock internals really that strong?? My final question is how well will the stock drivetrain hold up to say 500 hp.

There was a non turbo version in the 2.0 NT 1Gs, as well as the infamous turbo 4g63 in the 90-99 DSMs and the 91-92 GVR4s.

None with VVT, though mitsu does make newer motors that use it. All turbo 4G63s used a knock sensor to help dynamically determine where to set ingnition timing. Not sure if the NT models use it as well.

Yes. Two good friends of mine can drive the dyno and put down 500 whp, then drive it home. Stock motors. Many people have done the same. Low 11s or better is possible at this level.

Thats a little tougher to answer. It depends on the weight of the car and the driving style, in adition to the condition of the stock driveline components, and what year DSM you have. But some poeple brake certain driveline parts running just in the 14s, while others take stock drivelines into the low 11s and high 10s. But you can be sure the stock driveline wont take low 11s if you race it every single week or beat on it every day on the way to work. Frequency is another factor. Hope that helps.

EDIT> When talking about the strength of the internals, I should mention that I am refering to the "6 bolt" motors. These were used from 90-92. From 93-99 the "7 bolt" motor was used, and had slightly smaller rods. But people still do over 400 whp on stock internals in the 7 bolts.

Do you even know what a 4g63 is?? Maby they use a mitsu engine but I highly doubt that they use a full blown 4g63. Primarly because the Sonata is NOT TURBOCHARGED.

well the 2.0 4g63 really is as they say it is you can get 500 from a stock iternals just as long as you do it right you would have to open it up and clean it up and put all new seals in ot an probley new cranks and a water pump but other than that i sure you can do it. did you know the have biger ports than a 427 corvet engine. wow that is all i can say this engine was meant to race. about the drive line i have gone threw 2 rear cv axcel and blowen a rear end and my driveline has had no problems i say race it tell it breaks then see what out there to replace it with

To get 500 whp from a 4g63, you dont have to open it at all. And I hope "cranks" was a typo, there is only one

That is true, All 1g's n\t use the 4g63 engine, and turbo 2gs use it also. Not every 4g63 is turbocharged.

hyundai's did use mitsu engines, but don't think they were the 4g63's, im pretty sure the whole front end underpinnings of the early 90's sonata was all mitsubishi. some guy on import tuner or super street took adavantage of that and put a 3g63 in a sonata with few problems, maybe thats what talon was thinking about.

Yes is was the 4g63, although it wasnt in the Sonata... it was in the 1987-88 Stellar/Canada 2.0L - whatever the hell that is!?!?!

i read this thread earlier and decided to see if i could find any more info on it cause i was kinda curious also... but here is the site if anyone doesnt believe me that its not in the Sonata... you can check through the years like i did and you will only find it in 87-88!!!
