Because blinding light was not enough...
...I replaced both my horns today, and one of them is a dual air horn!
I didn't see the Hella horns locally, so I bought some at a local Autoparts store that are made in Italy by a company called Stebel. The are labeled under the US name "Carrand." They look exactly like the Hellas, but the pump is not painted red. Cost was $30 plus about $8.00 or so in wiring and connectors and such. The wiring itself is not that hard once you study the diagram and figure out what needs to go where. Hopefully Rrdstarr will be posting a picture soon! ![]() Now I have a horn again...my other one had totally died. Happy blasting! ![]()

Both your horns were bad? My alarm horn still works fine, but I've gone through 2 front horns. Guess I'll be moving to this mod myself.

Thanks Rick!
Some additional stuff:
I mounted the air pump behind a bracket that sits behind the air box. There's an empty hole there that is easy to reach and a hole can be drilled in the bracket for the air pump bolt. I circled the pump in blue. It's kind of far from the battery and the exhisting horn lead, but running wires to it wasn't that big of a deal and there are several exhisting ground bolts behind the air box. I used a spade type plug to connect to the horn lead so I didn't have to cut off the existing connector there and hung the relay from a hose near the air box (circled in yellow). Then, I just zip tied the horns on top of the ABS control box. This sucker is loud, BTW! I thought the sound may get trapped under the hood, but it gives out a pretty good blast from there! I was thinking of buying extra tubing and putting the horns behind my bumper, but I'm afriad the extra hose will cause a delay between when you hit the horn and when it honks, or maybe it may add extra stress tot he pump? I think it's plenty loud from where it is though, so maybe I'll just keep it there. This is definately one of the best inexpensive mods you can make and the only thing I wonder now is why I didn't do it sooner!

What I didn't realize is that the alarm is also tied into the front horn, so now when I activate my alarm, the air horn comes on too! I'm guessing that the idea behind the rearward horn was just to be a backup in case someone cut the wire to the front one. In any case, when my alarm activates, it's pretty loud now! I highly recommend this mod!

weird...
My horn now works like a champ! It's back to normal, and I am guessing it's from all the dust roads in Labrador, absorbing all the water and then drying up. I don't know if that's why, but it is louder now than when I bought the X new.

I used a different horn
Hanging alongside those horns at pep boys I saw some horns that had built in compressors and relay etc. They are dual horns that you hook up to each other and then to the stock horn connection. I installed them today and was able to get them into the stock location although pointing downwards. They are pretty damn loud and work great. They are about 10 bucks more expensive than the other ones. I figure the ten bucks was worth the time and wiring they saved me. Have any of yall tried these. I will post pics as soon as I can.

See above!
ChuckH has the generic ones that I think you are talking about? I have the dual Hellas, LOUD! VERY LOUD! I fixed mine by replacing the relay with a radio shack relay of the same spec! Works great now! Thanks to ChuckH again!

I think VaderX is talking about soemthing different. My horns are exactly like yours; just stamped with a different name. Sounds like what he is talking about are more like the regular horns? I dunno!

Rick,
I got the horn you sent. Thanks again man. When I find the time to make it out west for some wheeling, you got a case of beer coming your way! Dog

whoah hold on there turns out I am a moron. They are actually electric horns that sound like air horns. Oh well I guess I got waxed but to hell with it they sound great and It took me all of 10 minutes to install them so I am happy enough. Here is a pic in case your curious.

I just bought a set of dual air horns from Pep Boys tonight. I'll be installing them this Sunday at the MAXC mod day. My horns are blue. Havn't opened the package but I can see a pump and some clear air hose. I'll let you all know how it turns out and how loud they are. I'll get some pictures too.
I hope I get as good of results as ChuckH did. It was your rave reviews of the dual air horns that made me invest in them. I've become used to the dull dead duck behind my grill.

Goliath! they will deafen you! ChuckH helped me install mine and we had problems with a bad relay from Hella! We finlly got smart during testing and removed the hose that feeds the horns and just listened to the compressor pass gas instead of us bleeding from the ears!

Your right!!! These things are VERY LOUD . Before I could lay on my stock horn and I couldn't hear it over the roar of my tires. I tested the air horns while driving down the highway at 80mph and they overpower the tires and the radio. As ChuckH said: "This is definately one of the best inexpensive mods you can make and the only thing I wonder now is why I didn't do it sooner!" Couldn't have said it better myself. Come on peole, cut me off. I'm ready for ya
