Is it worth buying a car with high mileage?

A friend of mine wants to buy a 1993 BMW 318i with 260,000 kilometres on it. The car looks good and runs good, and he can get a very good deal on it.

I know that small engines like a 1.8 4 cyl don't have very long lives, but on the other hand BMW builds quality cars which have good reliability. My question is, is this car worth buying, why or why not?

Not that car, cuz if the engine does go out you are going to pay for the car over again (if not more) to have it rebuild/replaced.

A 1.8 4cyl can last a very long time. It's all about whether or not you and the previous owner take care of it.

high miles don't scare me. the only thing is if you are going to mod and race the car than you don't want high miles, but if you keep it stock and take care of it you could get quite a few miles out of it.

The only two tools you will ever need are WD-40 and duct tape. If it moves and it shouldn't use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should use WD-40.

do some research on the cars history, maintenance-wise and how the previous drivers treated it. they could have kept up all the regular maint. but still beat it into the ground. also, find out what the car is like. check out some reviews and find out what the strong and weak points are.
