Can somebody tell me if there is a difference between the US B16A2 and the JDM B16? Is the only difference the fact that one is left hand drive? Is the redline higher? More HP? Or is it just so I can run around with a huge JDM sticker taking up my whole back window, cause if thats the case that would make my car so much MORE HP and than I would beat everyone!!! (That's a rice joke for all the slow people)

Basically the JDM one has 8 more hp, slightly higher compression, and a couple more lbs ft trq.

JDM also has longer duration intake cam.

how can you tell if you have the jdm b16a or the usdm b16a???? tell me all the ways i can tell cause i want to know what i got

Jdm motor just say b16.... usdm says b16a2

mine says b16a thats it..... but some shop up here told me the jdm motor supposed to say b16a1

So is it worth it to get the JDM version, or just shop around my local junkyards for a B16A2? I found a site that I can get a JDM B16 shipped for around $2000 with 25K Mi on it. Even if I get the US version for the same price, it will still eventually cost more for the JDM when I factor in the cost for converting to left hand drive, or am I wrong about that?

it depends on what model car your putting the motor into, any b-series would fit in either car, but the wiring will be simpler if you follow these rules:

B16a 88-91 Civic/CRX
B16a2 99-00 Civic
B16a3 92-98 Civic

You found a b16A2 for $2000 with 25k miles? What site is that from? The cheapest I've found (from a reputable site) is almost 3k.

The B16A from the 89-91 civics had 158 Ps, ran a 10.2:1 compression ratio, had a cable clutch. There was one JDM B16A1 that had the 1 at the end, it was from the first rex's, and is very rare. after 91 the B16A ran a 10.4:1 comp.ratio, and that accounts for the slightly higher Ps. In the US in 93 the B16A3 showed its face in the Delsol, but had the 10.2:1 comp, and produced 160Hp, in 99-00 civics they only difference is the OBD IIb components. All the Japanese motors lack the number at the end of the code. Also as a side note, motors including B, H, D series had numbers at the end in the most of the world, so people maybe trying to pass off B16A1's, B18C6's, B18C4's, etc... and what not as JDM.

Anyway stay with in your OBD level and you will hve a decent time swapping out the motor, to idenify the 1st gen B's they have white plugs, this being the easiest way to tell, since other appearance items can be changed easily, such as intake manifolds, vavle covers, etc...

I read somewhere (at least I think I read it somewhere) that the JDM engines, being right hand drive, have to have stuff like that changed. Is this true, and what has to be changed? If the engine comes comlete with tranny, ecu and stuff, can my 99 Ex harness work? Or do I need to change the whole thing? I'm pretty sure I'd have to change it though, because my car is an automatic, and I would be swapping o manual.

forget about that right or left hand drive issues on engines and trannies, that is totally FALSE!...first you need to know if your JDM B16A is 1st or 2nd gen, you can check it first taking a look to the dohc vtec written in the valve cover. If VTEC is bigger than dohc you got a 2nd gen engine, the serial number of your engine MUST start with 5, all the harness plugs must be gray color (not milky), and if PGM-FI is written on your Intake Manifold, that is for sure a 1st gen B16A.

Ok than what about the wiring harness? Can i use the stock EX harness? I have a 99 EX so I would be sticking with the ODB2 JDM B16. I think I would have to change though, because like I said earlier I would be swapping the tranny from auto to manual. If I stick with the US model b16A2, is the swap pretty much just pulling the engine out, and putting the other in? I hope to get one from a junkyard, and than I would take the engine tranny combo, the Ecu, and the harnness all at once. Than I think it all goes in pretty straightforward. know I need the rear Si engine mount and one of the si tranny mounts to swap to manual. Does that sound right?

If you are swapping from auto to manual, you will need a lot more than just the tranny mount (which has to be custom by the way), you will need the clutch master cylinder, booster, all the hard lines, the pedal set. Also you're going to have to wire around the autos lock out circuit so you can start the car. Do a search here and on other forums for auto to manual conversion to get more specific info. Also, the reason you can't use JDM harnes is that they plug into opposite side of the engine bay, but aside from that and the steering rack everything else can be used in a USDM car.
