Question What OS are you running

Ok everyone. What operating system are you running on your pc and what do you think of it. Which one gave you the most greif in the past. How long since your last format other than to change to a new O/S

I have Win98 first edition.

Last format, Feb of this year

Win95 A version sucked big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I run Win98 SE on all of my systems except the beast which runs XP Pro Corp.

I did a clean install on all of the systems two weeks ago.

WinME abd Win95 are the worst OSs ever!!!!

I have a dual boot. Win XP Pro on one, and win 2k pro on the other. The 2k was put on in July, XP was put on in Oct. My next format will be when there are XP drivers for my burner, and camera. Thats the only reason I have kept 2k around.

The worst OS was win ME.

I would like to run Linux, but there are no DSL modem drivers for Linux, and I will not go back to a 56k modem.

WinME and hating it!! Sucks ass!!

Linux can't see most of my stuff and I don't care enough about getting Linux on my computer to try to make it work.

Would install Win2000, but that can't see my hard drive (ATA 100).

This is going to be hard for me because I use 2 different machines, and each machine has multiple OS's

My laptop is currently running:

Win ME [Upgrading to XP next week]
Caldera OpenLinux
My Older Desktop is currently running:

Win 98 SE
Redhat Linux 6
Win ME was a shitty upgrade from the 98SE that came on the laptop, and has been nothing but trouble. Caldera's OpenLinux is kinda dumbed down [at least the version I have] and its not all that great, but its still better than Windows IMO.

Win98SE is the old fallback for me. Its an older destop and not able to run much better, it could handle ME, but im not putting that crap on. Redhat 6 is kindof outdated now, but it is my favourite of all linux distribs to this point.

There are dsl drivers for linux, they can be tricky to work with and find tho. I have a few friends around here who have dsl working in linux.

And I dont blame ya about the 56k thing. I could never go back now. Im just so used to the speed, and I used to be content with 56k, but now I think i would end up commiting suicide wating for stuff to d/l

Did it come installed on the motherboard? Or do you have a seperate card? Because what you should have is a drivers disk that you will have to put in uring the install. Right at the beggining of the install it say press F6 to specify additional devices or something along those lines, so press F6 right at the start of the install. Then it will ask you to specify additional devices put the drivers disk in and press enter then select the Win 2000 river and press enter. Then it will see your hard drive.

Let me guess, promise ultra 100 controller? You can find the drivers on either your motherboard manufactur's site "if it is built on to the motherboard" or you can find them on the promise site.

Hope that helps.

2000 Professional. I like it a lot more then the other offerings of Microsoft. Since I cant stand Apple, and dont think much of Linux as a desktop solution, its about my only choice.

Yeah, the controller is on the ASUS board. It's Promise.

Well the thing is, the install won't accept my drivers! They're in the Win2000 directory on the drivers disk. So either ASUS (and Promise) is lying to me saying that it is written in a Win2000 compatible format, or something else. I've tried everything. I even tried replacing my ATA 100 drive with a ATA 33 one, but the motherboard (BIOS?) still gets caught up in it. When it starts up, it expects to see a ATA 100 drive and gives error messages when it doesn't see it. However, it still continues with the start up process. I was able to install Win2000 on that hard drive, but when it came time to Win2000 to actually start, it doesn't. Again, some issue with the hard drive and probably ATA 100 controller.

Why can only WinME see my drive?!?!

I would call tech support for Asus because I just installed Win2000 in one of their mobo's with drivers for the ATA100 right off their site. Problem is tech support for Asus is long distance. By all means though it should work.

Also as a side note, XP has built in drivers for your controller if you want to use XP. But I would call Asus to get the exact driver for your MOBO.

I don't know what DSL modem you have but...
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/

I'm running Linux Mandrake 8.1 and Win98 for games. As soon as I get Wine setup I'll be ditching the Windoze partition.

My next task will be www.linuxfromscratch.com. I'm a glutton for punishment but I will NOT bow to the evil winborg! :finger: you bill!
