Red face Z24 Ran out of gas and won't start

Yesterday my 2001 Z24 ran out of gas. I put approx. a 1/4 tank of gas in it and now it will not start. I can hear the fuel pump humm. Tried starting the car numerous times it sounds like it is going to turn over but it won't. I need help asap because I need my car tomorrow to go to a Dr.'s appt. Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Z24 Ran out of gas and won't start

Get a can of carb cleaner and spray it into the intake.....then try and start the car......if it runs as long as you spray, then it is a fuel problem.....either the injectors are not firing or you have no fuel pressure.....if there is a shraeder valve on the fuel rail, depress it and see if fuel shoots out....if nothing or a trickle, then most likely the pump....just because you hear the pump, doesn't mean it is pumping....

One thing I harp on......never run a vehicle under 1/4 of a tank.....if you constantly do, you are asking for problems....that fuel pump gets very hot.......the gas covering it, keeps it cool.....you will will shorten the life of the pump this way....

Thank you so much for the info. I put a half tank of gas in and it started and runs. Only problem is, it is running very rough! Thank you for the advice about the gas pump.
